Oxford Petroleum Research Associates provides independent analysis of oil, gas and carbon market trends for the energy industry. Our interests and expertise include oil market fundamentals, supply and demand forecasts, oil price and market analysis, strategic risk management and training for the oil, gas and power industries.

Founded in 1986 by David Long and Margaret Chadwick, opra works closely with Argus Media Ltd and the Centre for Global Energy Studies (CGES), providing oil industry data, analysis and editorial content for their publications. opra also contributes to a wide range of training courses organised by MJM Energy.


David Long

David Long is an independent consultant and writer specialising in the oil, gas and carbon emissions trading markets. He is the editor of the Oil Trading Manual (OTM), a widely-used and well-known comprehensive guide to the world oil market, and the Gas Trading Manual (GTM), a companion volume on the gas market. He also lectures on energy markets (including carbon emissions trading) and price risk management for industry training courses organised by MJMEnergy and acts as a consultant advising on the valuation of crude oil and refined products.

David began his career with BP in 1977, where he worked in Corporate Planning and Supply Departments. He then spent two years on secondment at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies, studying the development of forward paper markets in oil, in particular the 15-day Brent market, before joining the Institute as a Research Fellow from 1986 to 1989. While at the Institute he took part in research on the oil export policies of the former Soviet Union, the development of the European refining industry, and the behaviour of prices in the physical, forward and futures markets for gasoil in Europe.

Margaret Chadwick

Margaret Chadwick spent the first few years of her career in the Corporate Planning department of BP where she worked on refinery economics and investment analysis. She then spent a year as a software analyst with Tessella before joining the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies for a three-year period as a research fellow. While there she contributed to studies on the North Sea crude market, the Soviet Union oil industry and the link between demand, pricing and the global refining industry, all of which were subsequently published as books. In 1986, with David Long, she founded Oxford Petroleum Research Associates, of which they are both directors. She writes regularly for Argus Media Ltd and the Centre for Global Energy Studies on a range of issues, including supply and demand fundamentals, refining, emissions trading and other energy sources and lectures on courses for the energy industry on oil market fundamentals, including modules on refinery processes, refinery economics and product trade and carbon emissions trading.
