St Dogmaels Abbey was originally built in the 12th Century but was ruined during the reign of Henry VIII. The remaining ruins form a perfect raised stage in front of a flat area of grass used as an auditorium. There is also an intact spiral staircase leading from the stage to higher parts of the ruin where different scenes can be performed at different levels.
In Pericles, the set designer was Amy Levene and we made the nautical theme of the play central to the set by including a lateen style rig on the main part of the stage. The sail was raised and lowered at various points of the play and was used as a visual effect for the appearance of the goddess Diana in the final scenes. (See photos).
