Abbey Shakespeare Players 2017: Richard II

For God's sake, let us sit upon the ground
And tell sad stories of the death of kings;
How some have been deposed; some slain in war,
Some haunted by the ghosts they have deposed;
Some poison'd by their wives: some sleeping kill'd;
All murder'd:
Richard II, Act III Sc 2

The Abbey Shakespeare Players are thrilled to present Richard II for the first time in their thirty-year history of performances in the majestic ruins of St Dogmaels Abbey.

The play follows the final two years of King Richard's life as he fights to retain the crown in face of opposition led by Henry Bolingbroke, Duke of Hereford.

In his account of the struggle between these two contrasting leaders, Shakespeare explores what it means to be human, and to be king - and how the balance of this understanding can change the direction of an entire nation.

Not all the water in the rough rude sea
Can wash the balm off from an anointed king;
The breath of worldly men cannot depose
The deputy elected by the Lord:
Richard II, Act III Sc 2
