And there they... fleet the time carelessly, as they did in the golden world.
Charles, Act I Sc 1
Duke Senior, usurped at court by his brother Frederick, has decamped to the Forest of Arden. Orlando, a young man of the court is persecuted by his elder brother Oliver and must also flee; but not before he falls in love with Senior's daughter Rosalind. Banished by her angry uncle and disguised as a boy, Rosalind goes with her cousin Celia to join the exiles in a forest where comedy and romance flourish, but human wickedness seems unable to prosper.
Led by the exuberant Rosalind, a cast of lovers, villains, comedians and malcontents become entwined in a kaleidoscopic chain of love triangles as Shakespeare's effortless mix of the comic and the serious combine in the benignly magical Forest of Arden.
We that are true lovers run into strange capers; but as all is mortal in nature, so is all nature in love, mortal in folly.
Touchstone, Act II Sc 4
The big round tears
Coursed one another down his innocent nose,
In piteous chase.
